This is a story about a double coincidence...
A while back, Liv and I read a humorous book by John Moe, who besides being a writer is a commentator on NPR and Seattle radio. Conservatize Me is a semi-serious look at Moe’s attempt to understand the conservative viewpoint. Although much of his experiment is silly (wearing different clothes, listening to country music, and eating beef jerky), he does interview some leaders of the conservative movement, including Jonah Goldberg, editor of National Review Online.
Goldberg asked to meet him at a Starbucks, which pleased Moe immensely because he had assumed patronizing this left-leaning company would be off limits for conservatives. What really blew him away, however, was that when he met Goldberg, Goldberg was drinking out of a Starbuck’s cup that featured a quote from—Jonah Goldberg! Moe wasn't sure if this was a major coincidence or if Goldberg always carried his special cup with him to psyche out others.
Okay, that’s coincidence #1...
During our Christmas week California vacation, we decided to visit the Richard M. Nixon Library and Museum partly because John Moe had given it a good review in his book. We ended up getting to Yorba Linda about an hour before the museum opened (not adjusting to the time zone change helped us experience the ‘rope drop’ opening at Disneyland as well). To kill time, we bought coffee and a New York Times at a nearby Starbucks. I was just thinking about John Moe and Conservatize Me due to the confluence of Starbucks and the Nixon library when I realized my cup featured a quote from—John Moe!

I don't know about John Moe but it sounds like a book I would like to read. I really need to make an effort to understand the conservative point of view since so many people in my extended family seem to have it. By the way, I love the Maizie pictures.
