Shrinky Dinks

I realised I had a reader when someone complained that I had not posted anything in a long time. So this one's for you, Kristine!

Being overwhelmed with tomatoes, I decided it might be nice to dry some for future use. My 1970s-era microwave cookbook said this could be done in an hour and a half on 30% power. The Internet told me that it could be done in a conventional oven at the lowest possible temperature in 8 hours. Both seemed pretty wasteful of energy, but I chose the oven as I could fit more tomato slices in.

Unfortunately, (you knew that was coming, right?) after 8+ hours the tomatoes on the top rack of the oven were still moist. I decided to finish the process in the microwave--set it at low power for 15 minutes--and burned the remaining tomatoes to a crisp. I figure my remaining sandwich baggie of dried tomatoes cost about $100/pound. And I don't even like tomatoes.
